Tuileries Palace

The Tuileries Palace once occupied the vast, open space between the Louvre and the Tuileries Garden, where only an empty courtyard stands today. Commissioned by Catherine de Medici in fifteen sixty-four, the palace took its name from the tile-making factories that previously covered the site. For nearly three centuries, it served as the Parisian residence for generations of French monarchs and emperors, from Henri the Fourth to Napoleon the Third.
