The Obélisque de Louxor is a twenty-three-meter-tall granite monolith covered in ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs that rises from the center of the Place de la Concorde. Crafted over three thousand years ago for the Temple of Luxor, this needle of red syenite represents the oldest monument in Paris. It arrived as a diplomatic gift from the Egyptian viceroy Mehemet Ali to King Charles the Tenth in the eighteen thirties, intended as a gesture of friendship following the deciphering of hieroglyphs by Jean-François Champollion.
