The most recognizable feature of this massive complex is the shimmering golden dome that rises over one hundred meters above the Paris skyline. King Louis the Fourteenth commissioned the Hôtel des Invalides in sixteen seventy, intending it to serve as a sanctuary, hospital, and retirement home for soldiers wounded or aged during his campaigns. Architect Libéral Bruant designed the sprawling site, which included courtyards and chapels, to provide veterans with a permanent place of care and dignity within the city.
