Palais de la Légion d'Honneur

The Palais de la Légion d’Honneur is recognized by its refined neoclassical façade and the sweeping courtyard that opens toward the Seine. Originally built between seventeen eighty-two and seventeen eighty-seven as the Hôtel de Salm, the mansion was designed by architect Pierre Rousseau for the German Prince Frederick the Third of Salm-Kyrburg. The building became an object of such fascination during its construction that Thomas Jefferson, then living in Paris, famously wrote that he had fallen in love with it.
