The Jardin des Plantes is marked by a long, central perspective of manicured flowerbeds that stretches toward the galleries of the National Museum of Natural History. Founded in sixteen thirty-five by King Louis the Thirteenth, it began as a royal garden for medicinal plants to train physicians and apothecaries. Its creator, the king’s doctor Guy de La Brosse, believed that students should learn by observing living plants rather than just reading ancient texts.
