Sorbonne University

The Sorbonne is defined by its massive, cohesive stone facade and the distinct dome that rises above the surrounding buildings in the Latin Quarter. Originally founded in twelve fifty-seven by Robert de Sorbon as a theological college for poor students, the institution evolved over centuries to become the preeminent center of French intellectual life. Much of the current structure, with its uniform architectural style and courtyards, dates to the late nineteenth century when politician Jules Ferry commissioned architect Henri-Paul Nénot to unify the scattered buildings into a singular, grand temple of knowledge.
