The Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is distinguished by its steep, rocky cliffs and a central lake that circles a jagged island topped by a small, round temple. It opened in eighteen sixty-seven as part of a massive urban renewal project directed by Baron Haussmann for Emperor Napoleon the Third.
