Gibbet of Montfaucon

The Gibbet of Montfaucon once stood as the primary gallows for the Kings of France, occupying a prominent hill outside the medieval city walls. This structure, first established in the late thirteenth century, consisted of a large masonry platform that supported numerous stone columns and beams. It functioned as a grim display of royal justice, where criminals and high-ranking traitors were hanged and their bodies left to hang for years as a public warning.
