Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord

The Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord is recognizable by its weathered, rustic interior where exposed brick, peeling plaster, and raw wooden beams remain visible beneath the ornate nineteenth-century architecture. Built in eighteen seventy-six on the site of a planned barracks, the building spent decades struggling with erratic management, closures, and long periods of abandonment. Its survival was uncertain until nineteen seventy-four, when the acclaimed British director Peter Brook and producer Micheline Rozan discovered the derelict, rain-damaged space.
