Folies Bergère

The Folies Bergère at thirty-two Rue Richer is marked by a prominent Art Deco façade that stands out along the street. Opened in May eighteen sixty-nine, the venue began as a hybrid space for operettas, songs, and gymnastics. It originally operated under the name Folies Trévise, but the local Duke of Trévise reportedly objected to the use of his family name for a site of such rowdy entertainment. By eighteen seventy-two, the theater took its permanent name from the nearby Rue Bergère.
