During the final days of the Paris Commune in May eighteen seventy-one, the Tuileries Palace, located in the heart of the first arrondissement, was consumed by flames. This royal residence, which had served French monarchs from Henry the Fourth to Napoleon the Third, was set ablaze by Communards as a symbolic act of defiance against the Second Empire. The fire raged for two days, fueled by oil and gas, leaving behind a hollowed-out skeleton of the once-grand structure.
