The Hôtel-Dieu stands on the Île de la Cité as a vast nineteenth-century structure of colonnaded galleries and central courtyards. Recognized as the oldest hospital in Paris, it traces its origins to a religious foundation by Saint Landry in six hundred fifty-one. For centuries, it functioned as a refuge for the poor and sick, operated by Augustinian nuns. The name itself, meaning Hostel of God, reflects its early mission to offer food and shelter alongside medical care to pilgrims and the destitute.
