Couvent des Célestins

religious

The Caserne des Célestins is marked by its distinctive facade of ocher brick and stone, designed by architect Jacques Hermant at the turn of the twentieth century. This complex occupies the site where the medieval Couvent des Célestins once stood. For centuries, that monastery served as the second most important royal burial ground in France, after the Basilica of Saint-Denis. Princes of the blood and dignitaries, including the last king of Armenia, Léon the Fifth, were laid to rest within its walls near the former royal residence of Hôtel Saint-Pol.
