The ancient city wall of Munich is distinguished by its heavy, weathered masonry, often found preserved behind protective glass displays in the historic center. This wall system once defined the boundaries of medieval Munich, beginning with a first circuit completed around eleven seventy-five that protected the city's early residents. By the late thirteenth century, a more extensive outer wall was constructed, featuring eight gates that regulated trade and defense for the flourishing town.
