St. Ludwig München

St. Ludwig, known locally as the Ludwigskirche, is defined by its two tall steeples and a massive, arched entrance that rises above the surrounding buildings. Commissioned by King Ludwig the First and completed in eighteen forty-four, this Catholic parish and university church was designed by architect Friedrich von Gärtner to anchor the king’s grand boulevard. Its exterior features a distinctive, colorful roof of glazed tiles, arranged like a woven rug, which stands in contrast to the starker white stucco of its facade.
