The Hofbräuhaus München is recognizable by its three-story facade and its central location at the Platzl, where it has stood since seventeen hundred and seven. Originally commissioned in fifteen eighty-nine by Duke Wilhelm the Fifth, it functioned as a state-owned brewery created to provide beer for the royal court and reduce the state's reliance on expensive imports. In eighteen twenty-eight, King Ludwig the First opened the doors to the public, transforming the royal institution into the beer hall that operates today.
