Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne is a sprawling building of white and gray concrete defined by its central glass rotunda, a dome thirty meters in diameter that acts as the entry point for four independent museums housed under one roof. Opened in two thousand two, the structure occupies a site that once held the Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment’s barracks, which were largely destroyed during the Second World War. For nearly twenty years after the war, this vacant patch of land served as a frequent venue for the traveling Circus Roncalli before the government designated it for a new museum complex.
