Ussher Fort

Ussher Fort is a bastioned fortress identified by its thick walls of local stone and mortar, standing on a rocky promontory between two lagoons. The Dutch West India Company first constructed this site in sixteen forty-nine, naming it Fort Crèvecœur, or "broken heart," to secure their commercial interests in gold and human captives along the coast. It became a central part of the European trade network, serving as a holding point for people who were transported to the Americas and the West Indies.
