Fort James is defined by its thick, bastioned stone walls that have stood along the Accra coastline since sixteen seventy-three. Built by the Royal African Company, it was designed as a fortified trading post for gold and enslaved people. The fort takes its name from James, the Duke of York, who later became King James the Second and served as the governor of the company during the fort's construction. This same name identifies the surrounding district of Jamestown.
