GCB Bank traces its origin to nineteen fifty-three, when it began as the Bank of the Gold Coast. Founded with a staff of twenty-seven, the institution was created to provide banking services to Ghanaian traders, farmers, and business people who struggled to secure financial support from the expatriate banks operating at the time. When Ghana attained independence in nineteen fifty-seven, the Bank of Ghana was established as the country's central bank, and the Bank of the Gold Coast was renamed Ghana Commercial Bank to focus on commercial banking.
