Numismatic Museum of Athens

The Numismatic Museum of Athens occupies a three-story neoclassical mansion on Panepistimiou Street, easily identified by the terracotta copies of ancient statues lining its roof and garden perimeter. Completed in eighteen eighty, this building was originally the residence of Heinrich Schliemann, the German archaeologist who famously excavated the site of ancient Troy. He named his home the Iliou Melathron, or "Palace of Troy," and commissioned the architect Ernst Ziller to design a space that reflected his intense obsession with antiquity.
