The Kimoneia (Kimon's Tombs)

The Kimoneia consists of two rectangular burial chambers carved directly into the bedrock on the northwestern slopes of the Hill of the Muses. This monument features a double tomb and represents the traditional resting place of the Olympic chariot-racing victor Kimon, who was the father of the general Miltiades. Ancient historians including Herodotus and Plutarch identified this spot by its proximity to the ancient road of Koile, a detail that helped archaeologists locate the lost district of Koile itself.
