The Varvakios Central Municipal Market is a sprawling, covered hall built of wrought iron and glass, stretching along Athinas Street. Construction began in eighteen seventy-eight, and the market opened in eighteen eighty-six, replacing an earlier collection of wooden stalls after a major fire devastated the area two years prior. It takes its name from Ioannis Varvakis, a Greek revolutionary hero and benefactor who left his fortune to the state.
