Agra Fort

landmark

Agra Fort is identifiable by its massive, crescent-shaped walls of red sandstone that rise seventy feet high and stretch for one and a half miles along the banks of the Yamuna River. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in fifteen sixty-five, this sprawling citadel served as the primary residence and seat of government for successive generations of Mughal rulers. Its construction, which replaced an ancient brick fort known as Badalgarh, employed thousands of workers over eight years to create a defensive powerhouse that blended Islamic, Persian, and Hindu architectural styles.
