Hokoku Shrine is marked by a prominent five-point-two-meter bronze statue of the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi, which stands near the entrance and faces toward the nearby Osaka Castle. This shrine, located within the grounds of Osaka Castle Park, was established in eighteen seventy-nine by order of Emperor Meiji to honor Hideyoshi, who unified Japan in the sixteenth century and chose this very site for his fortress.
