Osaka Tenmangu Shrine

Osaka Tenmangu Shrine is distinguished by its massive temple-style main gate, a departure from the typical torii gates found at many other Shinto sites. This structure serves as the entrance to a grounds dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a ninth-century scholar and politician deified as Tenjin, the god of learning. Established in nine forty-nine, the shrine marks the spot where Michizane reportedly stopped to pray while traveling into exile.
