Church of the Immaculate Conception

The Church of the Immaculate Conception, known locally as Las Monjas, is recognizable by its prominent, high-reaching octagonal dome. This structure stands out in the skyline, featuring a lantern window topped by a statue of the Immaculate Conception. The building project began in seventeen fifty-five under the direction of architect Francisco Martínez Gudiño, following a petition by Maria Josefa Lina de la Canal y Hervas, a young woman from one of the town's most prominent families who sought to establish a convent.
