The Museo Experimental el Eco is distinguished by its sharp, angular architecture, characterized by walls painted in yellow, black, and gray that seem to defy the rigid functionalism common in the nineteen fifties. Conceived in nineteen fifty-three by the German-Mexican artist Mathias Goeritz, the structure was commissioned by entrepreneur Daniel Mont as a space for artistic freedom. Goeritz, who was a sculptor and not an architect, designed the building as a living, penetrable sculpture intended to provoke direct emotional reactions from anyone moving through its halls.
