La Vida Colorada

Chefchaouen is known for the varying shades of blue that cover the walls, doors, and stairs of its old medina. These limestone-washed surfaces define the narrow, winding alleys and provide the city with its appearance. Local custom attributes the practice of painting the walls this color to the influence of Sephardic Jewish communities who settled in the city following their expulsion from Spain during the fifteenth century.
