View on Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is defined by its maze of streets and buildings washed in varying shades of blue, ranging from pale powder to deep cobalt. Tucked into the Rif Mountains, the city was established in fourteen seventy-one by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid as a military fortress to defend the region against Portuguese forces. The site was chosen for its strategic position between two mountain peaks that resemble the horns of a goat, which gives the city its name.
