Dye Shop

The dye shops of Chefchaouen are identified by the conical mounds of colorful powdered pigments displayed in burlap or plastic sacks along the street. These vibrant, granulated dyes are the primary tools of a local trade that has defined the aesthetic of the city for generations. While the blue pigment used to wash the town's famous walls is the most recognizable, the shops also carry a variety of earth tones and saturated colors extracted from local plants and minerals found in the surrounding Rif Mountains.
