The water mill stands along the Ras el Maa stream, the source of the cold mountain spring that prompted Moulay Ali ibn Rashid to establish the settlement of Chefchaouen in fourteen seventy-one. This site provided both strategic defensive value and the reliable, powerful flow of water emerging from the Rif Mountains. Historically, the stream fueled a series of mills along its banks, which functioned to grind grain and olives for the community.
