The Kasbah of Chefchaouen is a fortified enclosure built of rammed earth with ochre-colored walls and ten towers, standing in stark contrast to the blue-washed streets of the surrounding city. It was established in fourteen seventy-one by Ali ibn Rashid, a local leader who designed the fortress as a defensive stronghold to repel Portuguese forces encroaching on the northern Moroccan coast.
