Plaza España in the Chefchaouen region is a high-altitude mountain clearing defined by the presence of the Moroccan fir, or Abies marocana. This conifer is endemic to this specific stretch of the Rif Mountains and survives only at elevations above fifteen hundred meters. While the name borrows from Spanish colonial history, the site functions as a gateway for trekking toward the summit of Mount Lakraa, the highest point in Talassemtane National Park at two thousand one hundred fifty-nine meters.
