Toko Dun Yong

Toko Dun Yong occupies the corner of Geldersekade and Stormsteeg, marked by its expansive, multi-story presence that stands out against the surrounding historic architecture. Originally founded in nineteen fifty-seven as a tiny shop of less than fifteen square meters, it holds the distinction of being the first Chinese supermarket in the Netherlands. The founder, Tang Yong, was a Chinese stoker who had arrived in Amsterdam on a passenger ship after the First World War. He eventually met and married a local woman named Stientje van Gaans, and together they opened this store to supply Chinese ingredients and household goods to the growing local community.
