Herengracht eighty-one carries a date of fifteen ninety inscribed into its brickwork, marking it as one of the oldest remaining residential houses in Amsterdam. While the city originated centuries earlier, frequent fires throughout the middle ages decimated the early wooden landscape. This merchant’s house persists as a rare survivor from the era just before the city council mandated stone and brick construction to curb the spread of flames.
