Café 't Smalle

Café 't Smalle is a traditional brown café located at number twelve Egelantiersgracht. The building dates back to the late eighteenth century, when a German immigrant named Pieter Hoppe arrived in Amsterdam and established a wine shop on this site. Hoppe eventually expanded his business into a liqueur distillery and production facility for jenever, the traditional Dutch juniper-flavored spirit. The interior of the café once served as Hoppe's private tasting room, where customers sampled his spirits before making their purchases.
