Te Papaiouru Marae is the traditional gathering place of the Ngāti Whakaue people, located on the shores of Lake Rotorua in the village of Ohinemutu. Its most prominent feature is the Tamatekapua meeting house, a structure marked by intricate carvings that are often inlaid with shimmering pāua shells. This meeting house honors Tama-te-kapua, the captain of the Te Arawa canoe that arrived in New Zealand from Polynesia around thirteen fifty.
