Te Runanga Tea House is a single-story wooden pavilion defined by its wide, three-sided veranda that wraps around the building. Opened on December twelfth, nineteen oh three, by Sir Joseph Ward, the structure was built to offer visitors a place to socialize within the Rotorua Government Gardens. At the time, officials intended for the gardens to evolve from a simple sanatorium into a place for rest and recreation, and this tea pavilion provided a central spot for guests to drink tea or mineral waters while enjoying the scenery.
