Pig & Whistle, Historic Pub

The Pig and Whistle is a brick building on the corner of Haupapa and Tutanekai Streets identifiable by a plaster cast of Māori design running along its roofline. Construction began in nineteen thirty-nine under the direction of government architect J. T. Mair, and it opened in nineteen forty as the local police station. The entrance is flanked by two pillars, and the Royal Coat of Arms, carved in stone by the sculptor R. O. Gross, is mounted above the doorway.
