The Palace of Culture and Science rises above the Warsaw skyline as a monumental, two hundred thirty-seven-meter tower clad in stone slabs. Designed by Soviet architect Lev Rudnev and completed in nineteen fifty-five, it features a blend of socialist realist style and Polish renaissance architectural motifs. The building was a gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Poland, constructed in just three years by thousands of Soviet and Polish workers. Sixteen people died during its construction.
