The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is defined by three lone, neoclassical arches that stand isolated on Piłsudski Square. These stone remnants are the only surviving section of the once-grand Saxon Palace, which was destroyed by German forces in nineteen forty-four following the Warsaw Uprising. Beneath this surviving colonnade, an eternal flame burns day and night, guarded constantly by members of the Polish Armed Forces.
