Plac Zamkowy contains a tall stone column topped with a bronze statue of a king holding a sword and a cross. This is Sigismund’s Column, erected in sixteen forty-four to honor King Sigismund the Third Vasa, the monarch who moved the royal court from Kraków to Warsaw. The square takes a triangular shape and functions as the gateway to the city’s historic district.
