Greenmarket Square

Greenmarket Square is identified by its hand-dressed granite cobblestones and the surrounding colonial-era buildings, most notably the Old Town House. Established in sixteen ninety-six, the square began as a site for the Burgher Watch, where guards patrolled the city to maintain order. It soon evolved into a central trading hub for the Dutch East India Company, serving as a market for fresh produce from the nearby Company Gardens.
