The George Inn

other

The George Inn features an open, timber-framed courtyard surrounded by exterior galleries on its upper levels. This structure distinguishes it as the last surviving galleried coaching inn in London. Built in sixteen seventy-seven, the inn replaced a medieval predecessor that burned down during the Great Fire of Southwark. In its time, the inn acted as a critical terminal for coaches arriving from the south, providing a space where horses were changed and passengers could rest before continuing their journey toward London Bridge.
