The building at two hundred and nineteen High Street is a five-story tenement faced in ashlar, distinguished by the Doric pilasters flanking its ground-floor shopfronts. Its history is tied to the work of Doctor Elsie Inglis, a pioneer of women’s medicine and a leader in the Scottish women’s suffrage movement. In nineteen oh four, Inglis and her colleague Jessie McLaren MacGregor established a maternity hospice and dispensary within these walls to provide essential care for the poorest women in Edinburgh.
