Toto (Dog), cenotaph (Hollywood Forever Cemetery)

A life-size bronze statue of a Cairn terrier sits within the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, marking a memorial dedicated to the dog who played Toto in the nineteen thirty-nine film, The Wizard of Oz. While known to the world by her character’s name, the dog was actually a female named Terry. She was owned and trained by Carl Spitz, a prominent Hollywood animal trainer who pioneered the use of hand signals for on-screen performance.
