Cinerama Dome

The Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard is instantly recognizable by its exterior of three hundred sixteen interlocking concrete panels. These hexagons and pentagons create a distinct, honeycomb-like geodesic sphere that rises over the street. Developed by William R. Forman and opened in nineteen sixty-three, the theater was designed as a prototype to showcase the widescreen Cinerama film process. Construction crews worked around the clock to finish the project in just sixteen weeks, racing to meet the debut of the world premiere of the film It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World.
