The El Capitan Theatre stands out on Hollywood Boulevard with its ornate cast-concrete facade, designed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, and a towering vertical sign that anchors the corner of the block. Opened on May third, nineteen twenty-six, it was built by real estate developer Charles E. Toberman and theater impresario Sid Grauman. Originally named Hollywood's First Home of Spoken Drama, the venue hosted over one hundred and twenty live stage productions during its first decade, featuring performers like Clark Gable and Joan Fontaine.
