The Egyptian Theatre is defined by a deep, open-air forecourt fronting Hollywood Boulevard, flanked by massive columns and walls adorned with ancient-style hieroglyphs and murals. Opened in nineteen twenty-two by showman Sid Grauman and developer Charles Toberman, it was the first grand movie palace in Hollywood. The building originally caught the public’s imagination during a wave of Egyptomania that followed the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
